The Health Cliff: Your Cells Are Keeping Receipts
“How could this happen to me?”
I hear this constantly from people in their mid-forties who suddenly find themselves with mysterious symptoms, unexplained weight gain, crushing fatigue, or autoimmune diagnoses that seem to come out of nowhere. They’re confused, frustrated, and genuinely bewildered. All their life plans just got put on hold. After all, they exercise. They “try” to eat well. They get annual checkups.
So what happened?
Health Accumulation: The Invoice You Didn’t Know Was Coming
Here’s what is rarely considered in our instant world when it comes to health: it’s not just what you’re doing now. It’s what’s been accumulating in the background for the last two plus decades.
Think of your body like a bank account with a finite balance of resilience. Every small compromise makes a tiny withdrawal. One withdrawal? No problem. Your body has reserves. But twenty years of daily withdrawals? Eventually, you hit zero. And that’s when symptoms flood in all at once, making it feel like your body betrayed you overnight.
You got breast implants at 28 because you wanted to feel confident.
You went on birth control at 22 to manage your cycle.
You took stomach acid blocking meds for years because it was easier than locking your food routine in.
You held on to bitterness.
You used Benadryl nightly to fall asleep.
You powered through exhaustion with coffee, survived on drive-thru dinners while running the kids around.
You popped antibiotics every time you got a sinus infection.
You got inked because everybody was doing it and I want to remember this moment forever.
You participated in the yo-yo diet culture, saying each time, “I just need something to get me some quick results.”
You sat at a desk for eight hours a day.
You popped Tylenol or ibuprofen for fevers and body aches because you can not be slowed down.
You carried unmetabolized stress and fear that you never had time to process.
None of these things felt like a big deal at the time. Many were even doctor-approved. Most people around you were doing the same things.
Each of these seemingly minor choices created a small tax on your body’s systems. I say minor but these are actually massive choices and in many cases it is a miracle that your body made it this far.
Those breast implants? They’ve been triggering a low-grade immune response for years, your body constantly trying to wall off foreign material.
The birth control suppressed your natural hormone production, creating imbalances that compounded over time.
Acid reflux medications blocked your stomach acid, reducing nutrient absorption and disrupting your gut microbiome.
Benadryl interfered with your sleep architecture, preventing the deep restorative sleep your brain desperately needed.
The processed food generated inflammation and blood sugar chaos with every meal.
Caffeine became a substitute for actual energy, masking your body’s exhaustion signals.
Antibiotics decimated your gut bacteria repeatedly, weakening your immune system’s capacity to maintain balance.
Crash diets tanked your metabolism and created hormonal chaos.
Sedentary living caused your lymphatic system to stagnate and your muscles to atrophy, turning what was once a raging river into a cellular swamp.
Unmetabolized stress flooded your system with cortisol day after day, year after year.
Bitterness rotted your bones!
None of these killed you and by the grace of God you are still here showing up looking for answers. But together, they quietly depleted your health reserves.
And then one day, you wake up and you can’t lose weight no matter what you do.
You’re diagnosed with an autoimmune condition.
You have raging diabetes.
You have painful arthritis and are being told you need a knee replacement.
Your energy is so low you can barely function.
Your mind is a walking panic attack.
You didn’t fall off a health cliff. You were standing at the edge for years, and finally, the twig you thought was a tree trunk snapped.
This is health accumulation in reverse. This is the compound interest of choices you didn’t know were compounding.
I know this is intense. This is Dr. Matt driving backwards.
If you’re reading this and recognizing yourself, don’t panic. And please, don’t shame yourself. You were doing the best you could with the information and inspiration you had.
We all were.
Now you understand that health isn’t built in dramatic gestures. It’s built in the small, daily choices that either deposit into or withdraw from your reserves.
Today is the day to get in the business of making deposits. Thankfully there is no cap on the volume of deposits you can make.
Living like I will make changes once disease hits, is fool’s gold. Let me wait until we are down 20 points in the 4th quarter then I will start playing defense and take good shots.
There is no such thing as a non-busy season.
The best time to rebuild your health reserves was twenty years ago. Just like planting the apple tree and investing for a nest egg.
The second-best time is today.
Accumulate Health!!!

I have so much work to do. Praying this will be my year to accumulate a massive amount of health and gain back some ground I lost.
